Peculiarities of English cuisine

It is thought that English cuisine is not so exquisite and diverse comparing to any other cuisine. Nevertheless, authentic English food is very delicious because it is cooked from high-quality ingredients. Recipes of British cuisine are based on centuries-old traditions.

Main meals

Traditionally, there are 4 meals a day, but nowadays these rules are not strictly followed. There is breakfast in the morning, lunch around noon, afternoon tea and dinner. Afternoon tea is a beautiful English tradition, which appeared in times of Queen Victoria.

Traditional meals

One of the most famous English dishes is fish and chips. This speciality is served in nearly every single pub and consists of a breaded fish with deep-fried chips.

Another renowned dish is full English breakfast which represents a quite substantial meal with fried eggs, bacon, sausage, beans in tomato sauce, tomatoes, mushrooms and toast.

Sundays are famous for Sunday roast with delicious roast beef, boiled vegetables and Yorkshire pudding.

Festive dishes

For Christmas English people roast whole turkey in the oven and serve it with cranberry sauce. It is usually accompanied by roast potatoes and vegetables. For dessert, they always have Christmas pudding cooked according to the traditional recipe.

People have always polluted their surroundings. But until now pollution was not such a serious problem. In past most people lived in uncrowded rural areas and didn’t have pollution-causing machines. But with the development of crowded industrial cities the problem of pollution has become more important. Using automobiles and other machines made pollution steadily worse. Since the 1950’s people have become alarmed with the danger of environmental pollution. Air, water, and soil are necessary for existence of all living things. But polluted air can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. On polluted soil, food products can’t be grown. In addition environmental pollution spoils the natural beauty of our planet.

The monument to the great son of the Ukrainian people Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861) was opened in Kharkiv on March, 25, 1935. Its authors are sculptor M. G. Manizer (1891-1966) and architect I. G. Langbard (1882-1951). The monument is a multi-form composition while at the same time it is perceived as the integral whole. The bronze figure of T. Shevchenko is towering on the granite three-edged pylon over 16 other figures.

These figures stand on the projections of the architectural spiral which twines round the eleven meter high pylon. They symbolize the continuous raising of the people's struggle against oppressors. A mighty figure of the Kobzar (5.5 m high) dominates over the monument. The statue is full of dynamics. Resolution and powerful inner force are seen in the whole statue. The great poet-democrat was fighting for the liberation of his people from social and national oppression. This is convincingly shown in the monument.

The figures which twine round the pedestal are two times smaller than that of the statue of Shevchenko. They are seen better from a short distance. Actors of Kharkov theatre "Beresil" N. Uzhviy, A. Buchma, I. Maryanen.
